FAITH AND FREEDOM by Providence Crowder

Speech:

I am here today because I love freedom.  This independence day, I will celebrate freedom—I will remember and honor the soldiers who have fought and died, and the ones who continue to fight for truth, human dignity, and liberty.   I am here today to exercise my free speech.  I am here because I want to preserve religious liberty for all.  I am here today because I am unapologetic of my faith in God and I am unashamed of the gospel of Jesus Christ, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes.  This great nation was founded upon the principle of religious freedom because our founders understood that our rights come from God, not government.

Patrick Henry, the American Patriot, congressman, and governor who coined the famous phrase, “Give me liberty or give me death” also said “It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded, not by religionists, but by Christians; not on religions, but on the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  For this very reason peoples of other faiths have been afforded asylum, prosperity, and freedom of worship here.”

Congressman and former presidential candidate Rick Santorum said:  “America is a country that was founded upon the concept that our rights come from our creator, come to us from God.  He doesn’t just say, do whatever you want with them, in fact he has laws that we must abide by.  In our case we have civil laws, but our civil laws have to comport with higher laws.”

But, at this time in America history, we see this concept of Religious freedom eroding day by day.  There has definitely been an attack on religious liberty and traditional American values.

Regardless of what side of the political isle one may side, no one of good conscience should ignore the fact that there is a concerted effort by this administration, the Obama administration, and its allies, to dissect the moral fibers of this nation.  Though Obama campaigned as a moderate, he is the most socially and radically liberal president in this nation’s history.  He and his administration have waged war against traditional marriage, they have waged war on the nuclear family, they have a total disrespect and disregard for our laws and our constitution.  President Obama is a fierce abortion advocate and he shows a general distain for American culture and Christian values.

Again, our religious liberties come from God, not government.  Yet, by their actions, the Obama administration has shown utter distain for the laws of God that were engrafted into our constitution—the laws that have made life and liberty central themes of the document.  He must have either misunderstood or has never took the time to read possibly the most important part of the Constitution—the First Amendment of the Bill of Rights, which states:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

As Christians, we have a mandate to be salt, to preserve what is right, to slow the moral deterioration caused by sin.  We are light, to show people the way to Christ, and to expose sin and corruption.

As Christians, we have a responsibility to stand against sin and stand on the authority of Scripture and remain faithful to tradition, as a framework in which to critique modern concerns.  For example with the issue of abortion, No matter how its packaged, abortion in reality means a violent death to a not yet born child, though the child has committed no crime and has had no trial.  This is not according to the opinion of man, but the truth of God.  The Bible states that God foreknew us and shaped us in our mother’s wombs. The baby growing inside of the mother’s womb is a person, and as persons, unborn children have the same rights to life as any other person. This is the whole premise of the pro-life/anti-abortion argument. Human life begins at the moment of conception.

According to abortion statistics from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and The Guttmacher Institute (AGI), over the past 35 years, there have been over 50 million legal abortions in the United States—that’s over one million reported deaths per year! As alarming as that figure is, abortion is only a symptom of a much greater problem. Any society that condones the premeditated taking of innocent life has undoubtedly rejected God’s law as an authority on morality. Their moral compass has failed to correctly inform them on matters of right and wrong, and what is just and unjust.

It is evident that the moral compass of mainstream America is broken. They have rejected the Bible as a source of authority on matters of morality.  They have chosen to forgo protecting the minority—the unborn—either through their general assent to abortion, their inaction/silence against abortion, or their many exceptions and excuses for abortion. We are a barbaric and uncivilized people when our very laws devalue human life to the point in which unborn children have become as disposable as old newspapers? We are a sick and wicked people when we celebrate the killing of an innocent child as “choice.”

Pope John Paul II recognized this new threat to human life.  He wrote about this threat in the Gospel of Life, Evangelium Vitae:

“Unfortunately, this disturbing state of affairs, far from decreasing, is expanding: with the new prospects opened up by scientific and technological progress there arise new forms of attacks on the dignity of the human being. At the same time a new cultural climate is developing and taking hold, which gives crimes against life a new and-if possible-even more sinister character, giving rise to further grave concern: broad sectors of public opinion justify certain crimes against life in the name of the rights of individual freedom, and on this basis they claim not only exemption from punishment but even authorization by the State, so that these things can be done with total freedom and indeed with the free assistance of health-care systems.”

We as Christians are salt, we are light, we are the voice of truth, we are the hands and feet of God, we are blessed, we are chosen, and we are called to action, radical action; proclaiming the good news and standing against sin in the world.  We are to let our light so shine before men that they see our good works and glorify God in heaven.

Now as salt and light, we are to expose sin, and I want to expose to you the threats that are before us—what the Obama administration has done and is doing, so that we all are informed voters come November and we have no excuse not to vote him out!

Abraham Lincoln once said, “We the people are the rightful masters of both congress and the courts, not to overthrow the constitution, but to overthrow men who would pervert the constitution.”

Obama must go—we must repeal Obamacare

I hope everyone here understands that the ObamaCare mandates threaten conscience rights and access to care.  David Limbaugh wrote about the Affordable Care Act, also known as ObamaCare, and had this to say about it.

“On March 22, 2010, Obama signed into law the Affordable Care Act.  This law contained no conscience protections and was working hard to cancel the Bush clause that was already in place.  In February of 2011, Health and Human Services got rid of a portion of the 2008 Bush rule and adopted a new rule that retained some protections for conscientious objectors to abortion, but still provided no protection for medical workers who have moral or religious objections to dispensing abortifacients such as Plan B, Ella or other emergency abortion causing contraception.  The administration blatantly ignores the scientific evidence that certain controversial prescriptions that abortion advocates promote as contraception are actually potential abortifacients, ending the life of a living, developing human embryo.  This attack on the people of faith in the medical community diminishes their civil rights.

Limbaugh notes that as a result of this administrations blatant disregard for religious liberty, as granted by God and re-affirmed by our constitution, we will lose many conscience-oriented healthcare professionals and hurt many faith-based institutions—this will impact the poor and patients in medically underserved areas.  A national survey has shown that 90 percent of faith-based physicians say they would leave the medical profession before performing a procedure that violates their conscience.

Concerning traditional marriage, President Obama refuses to defend the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) although the majority of the American people support it.

Archbishop Dolan, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops said, “Our federal government should not be presuming ill intent or moral blindness on the part of the overwhelming majority of its citizens, millions of whom have gone to the polls to directly support DOMA’s (defense of marriage acts) in their states and have thereby endorsed marriage as the union of man and woman.”

President Obama has actively worked to promote abortion:  he defunds abstinence programs and allows federal funds to be used to fund abortions and contraception.  He further believes that if his daughters “made a mistake,” then they should not be “punished with a baby.”  But  Cardinal DiNardo, Archbishop of Galveston Houston and chairman of the USCCB Committee on Pro-Life Activities reminds us that:

“Pregnancy is not disease and children are not a health problem—they are the next generation of Americans.”

There is much more that could be said, but to sum up, and end I want to reiterate a few things about how president Obama and his allies are directly attacking our religious liberties.

Despite candidate Obama portraying himself as a social moderate during the 2008 election season, we now know that President Obama has proven that he is the most socially liberal president in our nation’s history.  There is a deliberate attack on religion and on American culture and values from this administration.  And under the guise of pseudo names such as “tolerance,” “choice,” “social justice,” “civil rights,” and so on they force their wicked agenda on the American people.

Some of his signature acts include repealing Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, Using Federal Funds to support embryonic stem cell research, defunding abstinence programs and education in schools, supporting the legalization of same-sex marriage, using taxpayer funds for abortion and birth control.  President Obama’s extreme liberal stances on social issues have brought the culture wars in this country to a climax.  We as Christians must remain vocal, and not be afraid of this administration, or its allies—the enemy or his tactics—we serve a God who is victorious over sin and has given us a way that is right.

Ending Prayer:

I want to end by praying this Prayer for Religious Liberty of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops:

O GOD OUR CREATOR,

from your provident hand we have received

our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

You have called us as your people and given us

the right and the duty to worship you, the only true God,

and your Son, Jesus Christ.

Through the power and working of your Holy Spirit,

you call us to live out our faith in the midst of the world,

bringing the light and the saving truth of the Gospel

to every corner of society.

We ask you to bless us

in our vigilance for the gift of religious liberty.

Give us the strength of mind and heart

to readily defend our freedoms when they are threatened;

give us courage in making our voices heard

on behalf of the rights of your Church

and the freedom of conscience of all people of faith.

Grant, we pray, O heavenly Father,

a clear and united voice to all your sons and daughters

gathered in your Church

in this decisive hour in the history of our nation,

so that, with every trial withstood

and every danger overcome—

for the sake of our children, our grandchildren,

and all who come after us—

this great land will always be “one nation, under God,

indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen.
