Is governmental action justified by the end results of state intervention?
Thomas Jefferson said “Government that governs least, governs best”
Is this true or was Jefferson off base? If the end result is positive does the government have the right to or should they have the right to interfere anyway they see fit?
SECONDLY
How do you judge?
If the intentions are good but the results are bad or the exact opposite should the good intended actions remain in play?
Another quote that came to mind is
“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience”
C.S. Lewis
I would love to hear some discussion from all sides on this point as it seems to be at the core of a lot of issues such as Education and even Universal Healthcare.
